Background Information
- The earliest Canadian penny dates back to 1858.
However, because Canada was not a country at the time this
penny contained "Province of Canada" rather than "Dominion of
Canada"
- In 1908 Canada started minting its own coins rather than
shipping them from England
- In 1920 the size of the penny was reduced as you can see in
the picture below.
- In 1997, to save money, the penny was changed from mainly
copper to zinc plated with copper.
